Experiences in Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, Myanmar

Shwedagon temple is the Yangon’s most important religious site. This place locates on the top of the hill. It is up to 160m high, which including the ground. So you can even see the temple’s sparkling stupa from many locations in the city. The Government has issued regulations on buildings built in Yangon city area not to exceed the height of Shwedagon Pagoda.

This is the most sacred temple of all Buddhist sites in Myanmar. Currently, no one has confirmed when the pagoda was built. According to history books, the temple has been here since more than 2,500 before, which was built before Buddha died. It is considered the golden symbol of Myanmar.

You will be stunned by the 99m-tall golden tower with many smaller towers surrounding to store many sacred treasures of Buddhism.

The exterior is decorated with 27 tons of gold leaf, along with thousands of other diamonds and gems. The tower top with all 1065 gold bells and 421 silver bells.

It is a place for prayer, monks, Buddhist, and tourists to worship golden Buddha statues.

The Shwedagon Pagoda campus is very large. It has a total area of 50,000 m2. It has 4 main gates located at 4 directions to the pagoda, each with 2 guarded lion statues.

Shwedagon Pagoda opens from 4 am – 10 pm every day.

The ticket price is 8 USD/person for foreign visitors.

Tips for you guys:

  1. When you enter the pagoda, you must remove your shoes, so you should bring a plastic bag with shoes, then put them in your backpack. Shwedagon pagoda is very wide, you might go to this gate but coming out by another gate. If you put your shoes in your backpack, it will save time to get your shoes back and save the cost of keeping shoes.
  2. When visiting the temple at noon, at this time the harsh sunlight will make the brick floor extremely hot, you need to be careful when walking barefoot.
  3. When you come to this pagoda, you are not allowed to wear too revealing clothes such as the three-hole shirt, short skirt, thin clothes, etc., but you need to wear long-sleeved, long-sleeved clothes, not to reveal the chest. If you don’t forget to wear too few polite clothes, you can rent polite clothes at the temples.

This is a place worth to visit and experience the ancient Buddhist features of the local people here.
